According to culture minister Miquel Iceta, a €400 arts and entertainment voucher will be offered again next year for those turning 18 in 2022.
In July, it was announced that anyone born in 2004—regardless of nationality, including asylum seekers, whether or not they had refugee status—could download a ‘culture voucher’, or Bono Cultural, before October 15, regardless of their 18th birthday.
Up to €100 on physical books, magazines, press, music scores for singers and musicians, music supports like CDs, cassettes, and vinyl, and films on DVD or VHS video tape, all bought from stores rather than online; €100 on digital items, such as online magazines and press, e-books, video game or film streaming, music downloads, and subscriptions.
Computer and mobile phone hardware, software, textbooks, physical e-readers, musical instruments, drawing and painting supplies, clothing and accessories, restaurant meals, and sporting events are not covered.
The split between activity or product types ensures that all areas of the arts, entertainment, and culture industries that suffered financially from the pandemic will be boosted, not just those popular with young people like online services, streaming, and music downloads.
Any ‘New Year’ twin whose elder sibling was born on the right side of the chimes may have been disappointed to be born too late on their 17th birthday in 2022.
Any 2005-born person will turn 18 in 2023 and receive €400 to spend on books, films, music and activities.
It is unclear which areas the voucher will be valid for and how much can be spent per category, but it is likely to follow a similar format to the 2022 vouchers.
Miquel Iceta, who famously said he would spend his Bono Cultural on books, theatre tickets, and Elton John’s complete works if he were 18, warned earlier this year that the scheme would cost €210 million of taxpayer funds and had to be carefully managed to avoid voucher waste.
The pandemic shut down museums, cinemas, theatres, and physical shops selling ‘non-essential’ goods like books, music, and film nationwide and limited their hours.
Even though online orders and downloads were unaffected, film-makers, TV crew, screen artists, and studio music producers were forced to stop working in close quarters.
Iceta says free goods and services for young people’s 18th birthday is meant to open up new experiences they wouldn’t have considered otherwise, making them more likely to spend their ‘leisure money’ in these areas throughout their adult lives.
Your vouchers can only be used in your name, but you can buy books, DVDs, and CDs as gifts for loved ones.
The government website Bono Cultural Joven accepts applications.
Anyone turning 18 next year should check it regularly to see if these are being accepted for the 2023 campaign.
