This misinterpreted sci-fi sequel bombed

A great sequel that didn’t catch on and is now one of Netflix’s most watched.

Shane Black has trouble finding an audience for his films, which is a shame because they’re always high-quality, even in Marvel or this one. His is one of the best films in the MCU, ‘Iron Man 3’ (one of the last in the franchise with a personal and distinctive touch, when that was possible), and ‘The Predator’, which was on Disney + but has just arrived on Netflix, where it has hit number 1 in 39 countries.

Black (who was an uncredited co-writer of the legendary first installment of the saga) likes to mess around, and his films are often not only what is expected of them (‘The Predator’ has some of the best action and horror sequences of the saga), but also family comedies with children, buddy films (which he also topped with ‘Lethal Weapon’ and ‘The Last Boy Scout’), and many other genres. His ability to blend styles is evident in films like ‘Iron Man 3′, ‘Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang’, and ‘Two Tough Guys’.

This first installment since 2010’s Predators follows an Army sniper who encounters an alien spacecraft with a Predator, an alien hunter. After surviving, McKenna will join a team of unlikely soldiers to fight the creature, even when a second, more powerful Predator arrives.

Despite the Predators’ strong designs and action, Black’s humour was unpopular. Although the film earned 160 million dollars against 88 million dollars of budget, it did not find its audience, as shown by its very low Rotten Tomatoes scores, full of hurt fans who do not like their franchises to deviate even slightly from the predictable. However, you can now reclaim a film that is gaining fans who wonder how they missed it.

How many shows have nine straight perfect seasons? The horror, suspense, and black humour series ‘Inside No. 9’, directed and starring Reece Shearsmith and Steve Pemberton, stands out among others. Along with the previous eight, Filmin released this final season. In time for Halloween chills and laughs.

As always, we have six juicy chapters, each around 30 minutes long, that feature minimalist and theatrical grotesque situations, usually sharply satirical, and often reduced to a single space that becomes more suffocating and full of dark meanings. Unbridled ironies, bad decisions, despicable characters you’ll identify with… a misanthropic show with occasional hope.

For ten years, Shearsmith and Pemberton have repeated the same code: the most absolute British normality, with its disparity of characters, ages, and races, in conventional, parodying, and surprising places. In those places and with those people, something clicks (an unexpected attitude, an inevitable event nobody could have foreseen) and everything falls apart.

We are surprised by each episode of ‘Inside No. 9’ even though we know the codes because they work the same. Nine seasons later, Shearsmith and Pemberton’s ability to transform into many everyday beings still amazes. That’s why ‘Inside No. 9’ is TV’s best mystery and comedy. If you haven’t started watching it, you’re lucky: a discovery that will change our worldview awaits you. At least our daily routine.
