US Vice President Kamala Harris has consented to the guidelines for the upcoming debate with former President Donald Trump, but she feels that the Democratic contender will be harmed by the choice to not always have both mics on.

The decision appears to end the controversy about microphone muting that threatened to derail the September 10 presidential debate at the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia. It was made public on Wednesday in a letter from the Harris campaign to ABC News.

Harris’s consent to the debate guidelines coincided with Trump’s participation in a preparatory town hall meeting in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, with Fox News host Sean Hannity. Then, his longstanding ally questioned him on how he intended to challenge the Democratic nominee.

Microphones had to be muted throughout President Joe Biden’s campaign, with the exception of the candidate whose time it was to speak. Voters were unable to hear Mr. Trump’s rants at the June debate, according to some aides who expressed remorse for the choice. Mr. Biden’s decision to leave the campaign road was influenced by his appalling performance.

Upon replacing Joe Biden as the Democratic Party’s nominee for president, Ms. Harris’ team pushed for open mics throughout the discussion, claiming that this would “fully allow for substantive exchanges between the candidates.”

However, Harris’ advisors claimed in a letter seen by The Associated Press on Wednesday that the former prosecutor would be “fundamentally disadvantaged by this format, which will serve to shield Donald Trump from direct exchanges with the vice president.”

“We believe that this is the main justification for her campaign’s insistence on using muted microphones. We recognize that if we reject Donald Trump’s chosen format, he might not show up for the debate—as he has threatened to do in the past. We have consented to all of ABC’s suggested guidelines, including muted mics, so as not to taint the discussion,” the Harris campaign stated.

One of the officials said that a number of reporters will be present to hear anything the muted candidate could try to say. The complete debate rules, which ABC also posted on Wednesday, do not contain that particular detail. They are largely the same as those for the June debate between Mr. Trump and Mr. Biden.

The network has established guidelines that include a straightforward schedule of 90 minutes with two commercial breaks as well as the requirement that moderators Linsey Davis and David Muir “will be the only ones asking questions.”

“Moderators will endeavour to enforce response times and ensure a civilised discussion,” the channel stated.

Speaking on the phone to discuss debate preparation, a Harris campaign official revealed that if a candidate repeatedly interrupts, the moderator will issue a warning and both candidates’ microphones may be muted if there is a significant exchange so that the audience can follow along.

Following a virtual coin flip on Tuesday, which Mr. Trump won, the Republican contender selected to make the closing remarks, and Ms. Harris selected to speak from the podium to the right of the audience’s screens. There won’t be any written notes, no audience, and no subjects or questions that are shared with the campaigns or candidates beforehand.

In response to a query regarding the debate the following week, Trump restated his accusations that ABC is “dishonest” and “unfair” and that Harris’s campaign will “get the questions in advance.”
