James Cameron buys ‘Ghosts Of Hiroshima’ book

Oscar-winning filmmaker James Cameron has bought Charles Pellegrino’s Ghosts of Hiroshima book rights, Deadline reports.

If Avatar production permits, Cameron will use that and the 2015 Pellegrino book Last Train From Hiroshima to make a film. Cameron told Deadline the two nonfiction books will be adapted into one “uncompromising theatrical film.” Cameron will make his first non-Avatar film since Titanic.

The film will be Last Train From Hiroshima. Pellegrino’s Ghosts of Hiroshima will be published by Blackstone in August 2025. That marks the 80th anniversary of the 1945 bombing.

The film tells the story of a Japanese man who survived the Hiroshima atomic bombing, took a train to Nagasaki, and survived the nuclear explosion there.

Pellegrino’s books use bomb survivors and forensic archaeology’s new science. Pellegrino describes the two days in August 1945 when nuclear devices were detonated over Japan, changing life on Earth. Both books recount the atomic explosions from the perspectives of Japanese civilians on the ground and American flyers in the air. Between 150,000 and 246,000 people died in the bombings.

Cameron told Deadline, “It’s a subject that I’ve wanted to do a film about, that I’ve been wrestling with how to do it, over the years. I met Hiroshima and Nagasaki survivor Tsutomu Yamaguchi days before he died. He was hospitalised. I must continue his personal story since he passed it on. I can’t leave it.” While in Yamaguchi, Cameron and Pellegrino promised to “pass on his unique and harrowing experience to future generations.”

Since watching the Cuban Missile Crisis at age 8, Cameron has been afraid of nuclear war, as shown in The Terminator and Terminator 2: Judgement Day.

Shane Salerno at The Story Factory, who co-wrote Avatar: The Way of Water with Josh Friedman, Rick Jaffa, and Amanda Silver, Avatar: Fire and Ash, and two Avatar sequels, made the publishing deal for the Cameron project. Cameron used over-30-book author Pellegrino as a science consultant on Titanic and Avatar.

Blackstone CEO Josh Stanton said the imprint ‘is thrilled and honoured to be the publisher of Ghosts of Hiroshima by Charles Pellegrino, which will serve as part of the source material for James Cameron’s epic motion picture’.

No. 1 New York Times bestseller Oppenheimer’s audio book was published by Blackstone.

When promoting Oppenheimer, which won seven Oscars, including Best Director and Best Picture, Christopher Nolan answered questions about not showing the bombs’ effects on Japan by hoping that someone else would. Cameron used groundbreaking visual effects to tell the Titanic’s tragic story through an epic love story and class struggles, earning 11 Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Director, and $2.26 billion in 1998. One can only imagine what the master filmmaker, who has directed three of the four biggest films of all time, will do to tell this long-held story.

Salerno’s The Story Factory represents Pellegrino and will sell international rights to the new book. T.J. Newman’s Worst Case Scenario became The Story Factory’s 32nd NYT bestseller. Michael Mann’s Heat 2, a No. 1 New York Times bestseller, was also signed by the company for Warner Bros. The Story Factory will publish Quentin Tarantino-authorized “making of” books on Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and Inglourious Basterds. Jay Glennie and Tarantino write the books.
