'Loki' winds down the season on a high

Loki has changed a lot in six episodes. At least in terms of series tone and pace. Some of those turns have been surprising, others (like the final episode, with a high fan bet score) predictable but satisfying, and a few that have dipped interest in its central core. An unexpected dip that, as we said at the time, suggested a transtemporal buddy movie development. Luckily, a great final stretch overcame it.

‘Loki’s great loss was its spectacular chemistry between Owen Wilson and Tom Hiddleston, which suggested a great episodic series with two colleagues-who-can’t-stand-each-other solving problems across the timeline. Sophia Di Martino arrived and pulled off a romantic comedy with interdimensional disorders. It worked because Di Martino and Hiddleston understand each other, but not like the first two episodes’ unfulfilled promises.

In the end, you miss a few more episodes in ‘Loki’ (savour this, I don’t think I’ll write something like that again in the 21st century) that would better establish Loki and Loki’s relationship and make their emotional burdens make more sense without hyper-expository script lines. Or better use fascinating scenarios that are rarely seen, like AVT offices and processes. Or cultivating the Guardians of Time’s lie to make their revelation more shocking.

Although ‘Loki’ develops quickly, one of its most intriguing aspects is establishing his and Loki/s’ personalities. In the delirious penultimate episode (in which too many things happen, but anyway), the character’s main trait becomes clear: he always disappoints. He can’t deceive without masks, capes, and personalities. His redemption as Loki—what a character—defines him in his final act and makes him an antihero.

Finally, ‘Loki’ opened the door to the multiverse as a plot gimmick for Phase 4 of the MCU. The countless leaks (none definitive or corroborated) of the new ‘Spider-Man’ plot or that the next ‘Dr. Strange’ will feature the multiverse helped sow suspicion. The villain of ‘Loki’ is Kang, not the multiverses.

He is not named, but his origin and the last episode’s conclusion, with the generation of the multiverse (interesting that until now there was only one Earth 0, to use old and inappropriate terminology), point to a chaos that can be fully exploited or function as a cosmetic issue. However, ‘Loki‘ has not fully exploited him, and The Lokis, with that magnificent Alligator Loki at the head, are almost an eccentric detail for the series.

We left out Bill Cypher from ‘Gravity Falls’ teaming up with Miss Minutes as the best villain, but the conclusion is more satisfying and promising than that of ‘Wandavision’ (good villain, poor execution) or ‘Falcon and the Winter Soldier’ (all bad) and introduces us to a nemesis that can fight the Marvel Universe in a conflict similar to that of the Infinity Stones. Jonathan Majors will appear in the next ‘Ant-Man’. In the credits of the last episode, ‘Loki’ season 2 was announced as an easter egg.

Early doubts are emerging. Will the MCU’s Spider-Mans, Iron Men, and Hulks fight Kang thanks to the multiversal narrative? Will fans only get a few winks? We hope not, and the latest episode shows that Marvel is aware of the plot and dramatic possibilities ahead. All that’s left is betting on Kang the Conqueror’s next appearance.
