New Coldplay album "Moon Music"

Coldplay released their tenth album, “Moon Music,” on Friday. Frontman Chris Martin explains it.

British rock band Coldplay released their tenth studio album, Moon Music.[2] Parlophone in the UK and Atlantic Records in the US released it on 4 October 2024 as the sequel to Vol. I: From Earth with Love (2021) in their Music of the Spheres project. A deluxe edition called Full Moon was released on October 6 with ten more tracks.

The limited Tour Edition includes live collaborations with H.E.R. and BTS, while the album features Jon Hopkins, Burna Boy, Little Simz, Elyanna, Tini, and Ayra Starr. Hopkins, Ilya Salmanzadeh, Oscar Holter, and the Chainsmokers assisted Bill Rahko, Dan Green, Michael Ilbert, and Max Martin in production.

The third and final single, “All My Love,” was released alongside the album after Coldplay released “Feels Like I’m Falling in Love” and “We Pray” in anticipation. The band is touring worldwide to promote both Music of the Spheres albums.[2]

Moon Music topped charts in Belgium, Germany, Italy, Spain, and Sweden. The album was their tenth and fifth to top the UK Albums Chart and US Billboard 200. It was the first time a British band topped both countries since 2016.

After the ninth studio album Music of the Spheres, Vol. 1 from Earth with Love appears in the album booklet, hinting at a follow-up in the following years. After recording their tenth studio album, Moon Music, the band announced in January 2023.[3][4] The band performed songs from their tenth album on the Music of the Spheres World Tour.[5]

Coldplay announced on social media on 17 June 2024 that Moon Music would be released on 4 October.On August 16, 2024, the band revealed its track listing.El Mundo, Los Angeles Times, Vulture, and To Vima named the album one of the year’s most anticipated.[11]

Part of the album was recorded at Tarifa’s Punta Paloma studio.Coldplay used the office as a “base of operations” for two weeks in July and August 2024 while performing in Rome, Düsseldorf, and Helsinki.[12] Chris Martin said “it has to do with accepting all the different phases [of life]” and “shining your light without any needs for anything in return” when asked about the title.[13] Moon Music is a pop rock album with funk, afrobeat, and electronic influences.[14][15][16][17]

Moon Music is about waking up feeling terrible about yourself and the world—depressed, isolated, alone, and unable to be yourself. The album leads to the opposite feeling at the end.

The album cover features a 2020 moonbow photo by Argentine photographer Matías Alonso Revelli.[19] Coldplay requested the photo directly from him, and despite his many suggestions, they chose the original.[19] Pilar Zeta, a long-time collaborator, completed the package.[19] EcoCD editions of Moon Music were the first to use 90% recycled polycarbonate from post-consumer waste streams.[6]

In court documents released before Moon Music’s release, former manager Dave Holmes claimed to have negotiated a £35 million budget advance with Parlophone.[20] Sample clearance, recording, producer recruitment, and promotion cost money.[20] Holmes was fired by Coldplay, so it’s unclear if the budget was used.[20]

In anticipation of the album, the band held immersive listening pop-ups worldwide.From 1 to 7 October, Auckland, Berlin, Beijing, London, Paris, Toronto, and the Valley of the Moon in San Juan hosted them.On October 1, Coldplay held listening parties in indie record stores across the US in conjunction with Record Store Day [22]. The following day, a global theatrical event was launched.[23] Coldplay’s logo appeared on FC Barcelona’s uniforms as part of Spotify’s sponsorship.[24] All “Good Feelings” sales went to Choose Love, according to NME.[25] The band and Seoul Metropolitan Government held a drone light show at Ttukseom Hangang Park to celebrate the album and upcoming shows.[26]

On June 21, 2024, “Feels Like I’m Falling in Love” was released with a music video shot at Athens‘ Odeon of Herodes Atticus.[28] Regional outlets estimated that the filming cost €3 million, making it one of the most expensive.[29][30][31] Second single “We Pray” with Little Simz, Burna Boy, Elyanna, and Tini debuted on August 23.[32] On September 27, “IAAM” was released as part of the EA Sports FC 25 soundtrack.[33] Third single “All My Love” was released on 4 October 2024 as the album’s and career’s final single.[34][35]
