Paris Olympics ratings were 82% higher

NBCU’s platforms averaged 30.6 million viewers during the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, an 82% increase from the Tokyo Games and the most-watched ever.

The media giant reported Monday that its Paris prime time and prime time audience attracted 4.1 million daily viewers across its Peacock and NBCU Digital platforms, a 40% increase from all previous Summer and Winter Games combined.

Telemundo’s Spanish-language broadcast increased 26% over the Tokyo Games three years ago.

“The Olympic Games reclaimed their unique power to bring together the American media audience,” said NBC Olympics president Gary Zenkel. “America united around the 594 U.S. athletes and their stories for 17 consecutive days across NBC, Peacock, NBCU’s linear channels and in short form across social and digital.”

NBC and Peacock reported that the men’s basketball gold medal game between the US and France, which ended in a 98-87 thriller, averaged 20.3 million viewers over the weekend, making it the most-watched since the 1996 Atlanta Olympics.

Despite struggling to compete with Netflix and Amazon Prime Video, Comcast-owned Peacock’s 2020 streaming ratings were a victory. With an expanding library of sports and entertainment content, Peacock has grown in four years. The Paris Games outperformed the Tokyo Olympics in viewing.

According to the firm, Peacock streamed up to 60 simultaneous live activities and 300 live events every day in the first week of the Games, totaling more than 3,200 live events.

Before the 2024 Games, NBCU introduced Peacock Discovery Multiview, Live Actions, and its generative, AI-powered “Daily Olympic Recap” with Al Michael, which increased viewership for its more than 5,000 hours of Olympic coverage.

More over a quarter of Peacock’s Olympics viewers used the platform’s multi-view feature, which lets them watch numerous events at once, unlike traditional TV broadcasts.

The Tokyo Games were postponed from 2020 to 2021 due of the COVID-19 epidemic, which prevented the public from attending. The one-year delay and absence of live audiences certainly led to record Tokyo Games interest, which averaged 15.6 million viewers across NBC’s television and digital platforms in 2021.

Live sports have also managed to draw enormous audiences in recent years, even as television viewership declines and media corporations migrate to streaming. Live athletic events have expanded popularity while streaming companies struggle to maintain members, prompting a race to expand sports portfolios to prevent subscriber loss.

NBCUniversal spent aggressively in 2024 to entice subscribers and beat CNN’s parent company Warner Bros. Discovery to NBA broadcast rights. NBCU will pay more to broadcast the league’s games than it did with WBD, but its Olympic debut might boost subscriptions and income.

“We sold more advertising for the Paris Olympics than any other Games and delivered for all of our partners,” stated NBCUniversal Media Group Chairman Mark Lazarus. The ‘halo effect’ promoted the parks and studios like never before, boosting all our businesses.”

This “halo” included NBC, whose network news broadcasts witnessed increased ratings. The network reported that “NBC Nightly News,” hosted by Lester Holt, averaged 7.6 million viewers over two weeks and “Today” 3.1 million.

NBCU expected a rise in Peacock subscriptions when people streamed the Olympics, but did not divulge the number.

Comcast said last month that it lost 500,000 members in the second quarter, falling to 33 million, significantly below Netflix’s 277 million and Disney’s 153.6 million.
