Pentagon cancels Khalid Sheikh Mohammed plea deal

(Washington) Two days after the hotly debated ruling that would have spared Khalid Sheikh Mohammed from the death penalty, U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin canceled the plea agreement for the man known as the “mastermind” of the September 11, 2001 attacks on Friday.

This deal was made public on Wednesday for the individual who is still alive after the Republican camp expressed harsh condemnation and many relatives of the almost 3,000 dead were astonished to learn that Osama bin Laden, the most despised person connected to the September 11 attacks, was involved.

The arrangement that would have saved Walid bin Attash and Mustafa al-Hawsawi from the death penalty also applies to the two co-defendants who are being imprisoned at the US military camp in Guantánamo.

In a brief memo, the Defense Secretary stated, “I have decided that the responsibility for such a decision should rest with me, given the importance of the decision to enter into pretrial plea agreements with the defendants […].”

Notably, the House Armed Services Committee chairman, a Republican named Mike Rogers, wrote the secretary a letter describing the trades as “unconscionable.”

Sen. J.D. Vance, Donald Trump’s running mate in the November presidential election, stated at a rally that the country “needs a president who kills terrorists, not negotiates with them.” House Speaker Mike Johnson termed them a “slap in the face” to the families of the deceased.

The Secretary of Defense notes in his memo that, as a result, he is rescinding Susan K. Escallier’s authority over the three cases he is taking up. Escallier was the Defense Department’s chief official for military commissions.

“With immediate effect, in the exercise of my authority, I hereby revoke the three negotiated plea agreements signed on Wednesday,” it read.

According to American media, the arrangement pertaining to him notably spared Khalid Sheikh Mohammed from a trial in which he would have been sentenced to death in exchange for a life sentence.

Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, also referred to as “KSM” (S for Sheikh in English), was a “Terrorist Entrepreneur” who told investigators he had planned and orchestrated the worst assaults in recorded history. He has been a prisoner in Guantánamo’s ultra-secure facility for eighteen years.

The majority of people are familiar with the 59-year-old from the image of him that was shot that evening in 2003, when he was wearing a white T-shirt, his hair unkempt and his mustache bushy.

He is a Pakistani who was reared in Kuwait and is reported to have proposed the notion of plane crashes to Osama bin Laden, the head of al-Qaeda, in 1996.

Even though he never joined al-Qaeda, the official 9/11 report called him a “terrorist entrepreneur” who possessed the ideas and motives for attacks but lacked the resources and structure to carry them out.

The three men are charged with both terrorism and the killing of about 3,000 people during the attacks in New York and Washington, which were among the most horrific moments in American history.

The attempts to try them were stalled over whether the evidence against them was corrupted by the torture they endured in covert CIA prisons, thus they were never tried.

Attorneys representing the detainees revealed in March 2022 that talks were in progress for a potential plea agreement as opposed to a trial before the Guantánamo military tribunal.

The defendants specifically demanded an assurance that they would stay in solitary confinement at Guantánamo instead of being sent to a federal prison on the American mainland.
