Shogun' and Disney change the game

Disney+ wins the Emmys, which could change TV production and viewing.

‘Shogun’ clearly won this year’s Emmys. The Creative Arts Emmys, which recognises categories from supporting actors to all aspects of production, awarded it 14 technical awards, a season record. Four more were added last night in the main gala, bringing the total to 18, another record.

Since the series is a technical display with a visual category rarely seen in television, the 14 previous Emmys in Photography, Costumes, and Editing are not surprising. All of this would be meaningless without creative support, so FX added four more awards for Best Drama Series, Drama Actress (Anna Sawai), Drama Actor (Hiroyuki Sanada), and Drama Series Direction (Frederick EO Toye, for ‘Crimson Sky’).

However, ‘Shogun’ broke records beyond statuettes with this release. These are its accomplishments.

Since ‘The Bear’, the other big winner (in comedy, strangely), airs on FX, Disney’s win made the channel the night. Even though ‘The Bear’ found its footing in 2023, this year’s four are a milestone for Disney’s trophy cabinet. The extraordinary thing about ‘Shogun‘ may not be its awards, but another issue.

Television’s ‘Shogun‘ first impresses with its intricate feudal setting. The novel by James Clavell, which inspired an 80s miniseries, features samurai, katanas, honour, and tradition in late 17th-century Japan. The death of the Taiko (effective leader) creates a turbulent political environment because his only heir is a minor and a Council of Regents governs until he matures. An Englishman who recently arrived in the area will be used by Lord Yoshii Toranaga to gain an advantage in the regents’ conflict.

The series’ lavish and well-crafted style evokes pre-streaming times. Nowadays, television audiovisuals are equalised and flattened due to technical limitations and production needs, so a series like ‘Shogun’ is a luxury because it recovers moments in which a blockbuster was not necessarily “more shots with CGI”, but better costumes, sets, more careful interpretations, and plots that take their time to unfold because they do not h

FX’s extraordinary series dominates Disney+ with high ratings. It’s a fair recognition, now confirmed by the Emmys, of another kind of television, one we’ve lost since HBO’s early days and one that doesn’t emphasise cliffhangers and the weekly meme, but rather telling what it has to tell at the right pace. A relief, like samurai ethics in these noisy and confusing streaming times.
