In the world of science fiction, the ‘Terminator‘ franchise is a popular favorite. Not only for the two installments directed by James Cameron, which are considered to be classics of the genre (although, as we usually say here, the first one is more popular than the second), but also for contributions that are less well-known but are considered to be just as valid. For example, the fantastic series “Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles” or the ever-popular “Terminator 3,” which is possibly the most undervalued sequel to the series that is of the highest quality.

However, it is true that subsequent sequels have been unsuccessful in locating the appropriate tone or plot. For example, “Salvation,” “Genesis,” and “Dark Fate” each have their own set of extremely limited admirable qualities and very difficult challenges to overcome. It is possible that the most significant one was that none of them were able to totally disassociate themselves from the three canonical protagonists of the tale, who were John Connor, Sarah Connor, and Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Terminator. They often went back to these characters, and the outcomes were not always satisfactory.

‘Terminator Zero,’ the anime series that will be released on Netflix on the significant 29th of August (in effect, Judgement Day – in 1997-), makes the very wise decision to distance itself from that original concept and create a kind of sequel- reboot that, for a change, for once feels new and with the intention of injecting renewed sap into the franchise.

This decision was made in order to capitalize on the fact that the original concept was a significant one. In spite of the fact that it does not always succeed in accomplishing its goal, the intent is correct, and the end result is an installment that is quite fun but, in the end, is decidedly unimportant.

During the course of Terminator Zero, we will witness the early stages of the conflict between humans and machines. We will also investigate the beginnings of Skynet and the creation of the initial prototypes of the Terminator. We are going to proceed forward into the future, when a Terminator will be sent back in time (along with the subsequent human, which will be a woman) in order to remove a significant barrier to Skynet, which has not yet activated Judgement Day. And also to that alternative history, in a Japan where robots are widespread in society (with some fantastic screenplay ideas, such as visitors from the future having a difficult time locating guns because, oh, they will not be in the United States of America).

The beginning of the story begins with this point, which will eventually lead to the Terminator’s children being persecuted by the scientist. This is just the beginning. In a short amount of time, a number of unexpected turns of events occur, which ensure that the series remains engaging and captivating. It will become clear to us that every single individual has a secret that they wish to conceal, and it is not just the Terminators who are able to successfully disguise themselves as human beings.

Unfortunately, and in spite of the fact that the traditional Terminator films (that is, the first three) are constructed as extremely lengthy and insane chases with continual changes of vehicles, speeds, and arsenals, ‘Terminator Zero’ follows a different rhythm, which can surely disappoint more than one fan to a certain extent. There is a significant portion of the series that is comprised of conversations that take place between the scientist and Kokoro, an artificial intelligence who he is tasked with persuading to reject the threat posed by Skynet. Prior to this, he must convince her that mankind possesses sufficient virtues to be saved.

In reality, these conversations are not nearly as profound and intellectual as they appear to be; rather, they are somewhat mundane and full of commonplaces. Not only are the combat sequences a spectacle, but even the most inane talks are a visual treat. Product IG (Ghost in the Shell) more than lives up to the expectations that were set for it. However, this is not sufficient, particularly when the action and the story twists start to congregate together, which causes the rhythm of the series to become somewhat shattered in the last episodes.

Being able to take pleasure in ‘Terminator Zero’ is not difficult, particularly in light of the recent failures of the film industry. To add insult to injury, it is a sequel that, unlike the previous installments in the series, does not feel the need to continually incorporate references to the franchise (something that, for example, wrecked a portion of the enjoyment in “Alien: Romulus”), but rather stands on its own two feet. With a second batch of episodes still to be released, there is little doubt that the elements necessary to create an outstanding Terminator series are present. For now, all that is left to do is wait for Judgement Day (or the beginning of the new season).
