Suppose I were to tell you that there is a man who is still alive and who has the potential to be the father of more than a thousand children?This is how the new documentary series “The Man with 1,000 Kids” on Netflix begins. The series tells the stories of parents who discovered that their children’s sperm donor had made multiple donations to father approximately 550 children in several countries, according to their own calculations and figures from the Donorkind Foundation.

This individual is Jonathan Jacob Meijer, a singer and YouTuber from the Netherlands. He was the inspiration behind the current production of this series, which he referred to as “a very cheap sensationalist story” in an email that he sent to CNN.

In “The Man of 1,000 Children,” it is stated that some of the parents felt cheated, offended, and disappointed when they learnt of the quantity of gifts that Meijer made. However, Meijer defends himself by stating that his sole objective was to assist the parents in realizing their dream of having children.

CNN reported that Meijer made the decision to become a sperm donor after a college acquaintance informed her that he was unable to have children. This information had a significant influence on her.

The Dutch foundation Donorkind, which represents the interests of donor children, reports that the musician donated his sperm to at least thirteen clinics in the Netherlands and other countries. Additionally, the musician used other platforms and social media to approach potential parents who were looking for a donor for artificial insemination.

Meijer stated that he was “one of the best donors the parents could find” due to the fact that he only cost them for travel fees, provided them with the best sperm, and was tested for sexually transmitted diseases on a monthly basis.

He stated that Meijer “cared about the well-being of the children” and that he was willing to receive communication from any of the youngsters who were under the age of 18. According to him, “That is the reason why so many parents wanted me to be a donor.”

It is suggested by the title of the series that Meijer contributed his sperm to father 1,000 children in a variety of different nations; however, according to Donorkind’s data as well as his own data, the actual number of children that he fathered was 550. According to the foundation, clinical rules in the Netherlands specify that a donor is only allowed to contribute for a maximum of 25 children or 12 families. This is done to prevent undesirable outcomes such as inbreeding, incest, and psychological issues in donate offspring.

The American Society of Reproductive Medicine recommends a maximum of 25 births per donor in a population area of 800,000. This is in contrast to the situation in other nations, such as the United States, where there is no mandated national restriction.

According to Reuters, Meijer’s enormous gifts were brought to light for the first time in 2017, which resulted in his being prohibited from contributing to clinics in the Netherlands.

However, he continued to do so, and in 2023, a mother and the Donorkind Foundation filed a civil lawsuit against Meijer. The lawsuit accused Meijer of lying about the number of children born as a result of his sperm donations, and it requested that Meijer be prohibited from making any further donations, that he cease communicating with prospective parents, and that he write to the clinics that were storing his sperm in order to have it destroyed.

It was stated by Meijer in a video that was uploaded to YouTube that he had never lied to the parents, and that the criteria that are followed by sperm banks state that parents are not notified about the children that they have as a result of their donations.

Reuters said that the Hague District Court ordered him to write to clinics abroad to destroy whatever semen they had, with the exception of dosages intended for fathers who used their sperm to father children. Additionally, the court prohibited him from donating sperm to individuals who were interested in becoming fathers on their own.

She remarked, “When I was younger, I never imagined that I would have so many children. However, when I became a donor and noticed how many parents were pleased with my assistance and wanted me as a donor, everything happened very quickly, and I realized that I could reach a large number of children.”

Meijer gave an interview to CNN in which he stated that the documentary series “has a bad narrative that leaves out the good things about being a donor.” He also questioned the fact that the film only covers testimony from five different couples. “I’m glad I didn’t participate in that,” she added. “It was my mistake.”

CNN is still attempting to obtain a reaction from AJH Films, the production firm that is responsible for the documentary series, as well as a comment from Netflix regarding the claims.
