“The Matrix,” which started the franchise in 1999, is a landmark science fiction film. The 2003 sequels “The Matrix Reloaded” and “The Matrix Revolutions” and 2021’s “The Matrix Resurrections” followed. The fourth film, directed by Lana for the first time after 18 years, was a box office bomb. This is partly because HBO Max offered “The Matrix Resurrections,” along with Warner Bros.’ entire 2021 slate, for free. Despite a $190 million budget, it grossed $159 million worldwide.
