ARX Project makes innovative discoveries in Mexico and documents the process using cutting-edge tools.
They found odd megalithic slabs.
Discovering the original names of pre-Hispanic Mexican cities like Iztapan is fascinating. A Nahuatl translation is “Place where there is salt.” The population changed to San Miguel Ixtapan in 200 BC when salt miners settled there. We talk a lot about Yucatan, its tourism and wonders (and controversial gentrification), but San Miguel de Ixtapan, Mesoamerica, has an important archaeological zone.
ARX Project wants to reveal San Miguel Ixtapan’s secrets. They found something wrong.
Latest tech. Mexico is a mine; this is obvious. We occasionally hear about possible archaeological sites due to the Mayan Train, ongoing projects, or a neighbour who was expanding the ranch and can no longer do so.
The ARX Project uses the latest technology to explore archaeological sites like the Castle of Chichén Itzal in a non-invasive way, such as the church of Mitla in Oaxaca (discovering an entrance “to the infamous”).
San Miguel Ixtapan. As mentioned, this is an important archaeological site 100 kilometres southwest of Toluca that was inhabited for centuries but flourished from 700 to 900 AD. Teotihuacán declined during this time, and it is interesting that the first thing they found at the site was a rock model of one of its temples from 900–1200 AD. This is it:
The slabs. The area has been difficult to study, but ARX Project has been studying it since 2021 and made interesting discoveries. The inverted ‘T’ on a framed rectangle design of more than a dozen megalithic stone slabs may be the most important. Their meaning is unknown, but Mesoamerican concepts like Chicomoztoc may be related.
Origin: Unknown. Not only the ‘T”s meaning is unknown. Many slabs are dated to the Epiclassic period (700–900 AD), but others may be older. They could also be older and reused.
The oddest thing is that none of these megalithic slabs are carved or built in Mesoamerican style. In fact, researchers found more similarities with Peruvian and Bolivian rocks.
Aquiagua. Of course, “we have found an unknown civilisation” sounds good, but the ARX team doesn’t confirm it because they haven’t found the key that links this style of megalithic slabs to the region. A case like Stonehenge comes to mind, but that’s another topic.
ARX discovered terraces, fortifications, and pre-Hispanic structures along the Aquiagua River this year, along with slabs. A three-by-three-meter megalithic quarry block weighing over 25 tonnes was found, indicating that the civilisation had a sophisticated method for extracting and transporting large rocks.
Work to do. This is a great accomplishment, but ARX Project will continue studying the area, including using 3D photogrammetry to document, digitise, and conserve what they find.
As with the Egyptians on the Nile, they transported the rocks down the Aquiagua after working with them. For those interested, ARX Project is creating a digital library.
