Meet the women defying stereotypes on the ramp

Due to the physically difficult nature of the activities and the fact that they are exposed to unpredictable weather, the ramp has traditionally been regarded as a workplace that is dominated by men. Women are frequently seen assisting passengers with check-in procedures within the airports; nevertheless, their presence on the ramp is not as generally recognized as it is inside the terminals. On the other hand, this does not imply that ladies do not thrive on the tarmac; it is very possible that you have not yet heard of them.

As we celebrate International Women’s Day, we would want to take this opportunity to take this opportunity to introduce you to seven remarkable women who defy preconceptions and excel in their roles as female ramp agents at SATS.

Nearly a decade has passed since Eva began her career in the airport industry, during which she has spent the first seven years working as a Customer Service Agent for AirAsia. Her curiosity for what happens below the wings of an airplane has never been satisfied.

Eva seized the opportunity to finally see for herself what goes on at the ramp when the COVID-19 pandemic struck, and ever since then, she has been working with both male and female coworkers with great satisfaction.

She recalls how she used to hear comments about how women are not appropriate for a job on the tarmac. “Ramp work is not just a man’s game,” she says with a laugh, recalling how she used to hear those comments.

Her move from the safe confines of the terminals to the open expanse of the airside, where she had to contend with the blistering heat and stormy weather, was not an easy one, she says, conceding that it was not easy. She, however, took everything in stride and used the problems that she could not avoid as a source of inspiration to improve the way that she cared for her health.

In recent times, Eva has even gone so far as to stretch the limits of what she is capable of doing as a female ramp associate. In order to become an Aircraft Pushback Tug Driver, she obtained a license. In this role, she was responsible for maneuvering a tractor that was twice as large as she was in order to transport the plane from the parking bay to its taxi position.

She admits that she experienced a great deal of anxiety the very first time she sat into the driver’s seat by herself, fully conscious of the enormous responsibility that was placed on her shoulders. Despite this, her doggedness continues to garner the affection of her staff, and she was even honored with the title of Employee of the Month.

Anya is the youngest member of the SATS GTR Singapore Ramp Team. She joined the team as an intern for a period of five and a half months. She bravely seized the opportunity to study the ins and outs of air travel, despite the fact that she was still a little child and had a small frame.

I think it to be quite interesting. Anya admits, “I have always had the desire to work in close proximity to airplanes.” Because she has a background in Aeronautical Engineering, the ramp is the ideal playground for her to satisfy her interest about the activities that take place beneath the wings of the airplane.

In the short time that she has been doing her internship, Anya has not only improved her abilities in ramp servicing, but she has also made a positive impact in her work as a Headset Operator. In this role, she is responsible for coordinating ground servicing and aircraft pushback by communicating with the pilots.

“I get to see the sun rise over the horizon,” Anya says in response to a question about what she enjoys most about working at the ramp. She is referring to the amazing view that can be seen during early morning shifts at the airport.

Despite the fact that Anya’s internship has only come to an end, she has already made an impression on both her supervisors and her fellow ramp associates, demonstrating that neither gender nor size is a factor at the ramp.

Nani felt the need for something different, something more active, after spending several years working in the comfortable confines of airport terminals, assisting with passenger check-ins. She felt the want to do something different.

After a pause brought on by a tragic accident, she was given the opportunity to make a shift. The courageous move that Nani made was to become a member of the SATS GTR Singapore Ramp Team.

As of right now, Nani is working as a Ramp Specialist, which is a very important profession that involves operating various ground service equipment (GSE), ranging from the tractor to the towable sky loader machines. Before each and every flight, she makes sure that the bay is prepared, that the load is checked, and that there are sufficient baggage trolleys. It is Nani’s responsibility to ensure that the delivery of bags and cargo goes without a hitch, leaving no space for delays.

The aspect of her profession that Nani enjoys the most is… It is the liberty to move about freely. She is at her most comfortable when she is operating the tractor, and even when she has finished a flight, she is already on her way to assist in another location.

Nani believes that her place on the runway is where she shines the brightest, despite the fact that she is not the tallest person in the room. She exclaims with self-assurance, “I’m here to prove that women can excel in any role,” before hurriedly speeding out to the bay in preparation for her subsequent flight.
