Republicans propose naming a Washington airport after Trump.

Tuesday, April 2, a Republican representative in Congress, Guy Reschenthaler of Pennsylvania, announced in a press release that he had introduced a bill aimed at renaming Dulles International Airport, in the greater Washington region, after of the former president and Republican candidate for the next presidential election, Donald Trump .

The elected official and populist supporter wants the Virginia airport area, located 40 km from the city center of the American capital and named in honor of John Foster Dulles, former Secretary of State under Eisenhower, to become Donald J. Trump International Airport.

“Our nation has never been greater than under the leadership of President Donald J. Trump,” the elected official declared to justify his bill. “For the millions of domestic and international travelers passing through the airport, there is no better symbol of freedom, prosperity and strength than hearing “Welcome to Trump International Airport” as they land on American soil. »

Several other Republican representatives, including Paul Gosar of Arizona, Mike Waltz of Florida and Chuck Fleischmann of Tennessee, have given their support to this approach, which could take advantage of the majority of Donald Trump’s party in the House of Representatives to be adopted.

On Fox News , Alabama Republican Rep. Barry Moore, who supports the name change, noted that in 1998 Congress voted to rename Washington National Airport in honor of former President Ronald Reagan. “It is only fitting that we do the same for another of our greatest presidents, Donald J. Trump […] who fights for Americans like us. »

The Democratic majority in the Senate, however, only suggests a very short life expectancy for this bill.

With almost seven months until the November presidential vote, Donald Trump now faces 88 counts in four separate cases: attempting to overturn the result of the 2020 election, election interference in Georgia, falsification of business records in the purpose of covering up a story of adultery and mishandling of secret documents after leaving the White House.

This series of indictments makes him the first ex-president in the history of the United States to be criminally charged.

On the president. “If Republicans want to name something after him, I suggest they find a federal prison,” he wrote.

Another Democratic representative from Virginia, Jennifer Wexton, also indicated that the bill was another illustration of the “lack of seriousness” of radical Republicans in Congress. She reiterated that, of all the issues Americans want their elected officials to address, “renaming an airport in honor of someone who sought to undermine our democracy” is not one of them, she said . -she writes on the same network.

In my lifetime, our nation has never been greater than under the leadership of President Donald J. Trump,” Rep. Guy Reschenthaler (R-Pa.), the sponsor of a bill introduced Friday to name the Virginia airport the “Donald J. Trump International Airport,” said in a news release.

“As millions of domestic and international travelers fly through the airport, there is no better symbol of freedom, prosperity, and strength than hearing ‘Welcome to Trump International Airport’ as they land on American soil,” Reschenthaler continued.

Dulles — named for former Secretary of State John Foster Dulles, who served in the Eisenhower administration — is located in Virginia, more than 25 miles west of central Washington, D.C. It is one of three major airports in the D.C. area, alongside Reagan Washington National Airport, also in Virginia, and the Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport in Maryland.

Co-sponsors of the bill include GOP Reps. Mike Waltz (Fla.), Andy Ogles (Tenn.), Chuck Fleischmann (Tenn.), Paul Gosar (Ariz.), Troy Nehls (Texas) and Barry Moore (Ala.).

It is unclear whether the legislation, which has been introduced as Trump is the presumptive GOP nominee for president in November, will get traction in the Republican-controlled House, but it would be dead on arrival in the Democratic Senate.

Rep. Gerry Connolly (D-Va.), whose district partially includes Dulles, criticized the bill in a Tuesday post on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter.

“Donald Trump is facing 91 felony charges,” Connolly pointed out in his post. “If Republicans want to name something after him, I’d suggest they find a federal prison.”

Connolly’s fellow Virginian, Rep. Jennifer Wexton (D), whose district also partially includes Dulles, also criticized the bill in her own X post.

“This is just another in a long list of instances where extreme House Republicans have shown how unserious & delusional they are,” Wexton said Tuesday. “Let’s get to work on the real issues the American people sent us here for—not renaming an airport after someone who sought to undermine our democracy.”
