The megalopolis of New York City was the location of an earthquake that was unique to the region. There have been no reports of injuries at this point in time.
For a brief moment, New York City was shaken. On Friday, April 5, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported that an unusual earthquake measuring 4.7 magnitude occurred in close proximity to the megalopolis. At 2:23 p.m. GMT (10:23 a.m. local time), the earthquake struck seven kilometers north-northeast of Whitehouse station, New Jersey. New Jersey is located on the opposite side of the Hudson River from New York, which is the state that shares a border with New Jersey.
According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake occurred at a depth of five kilometers. In the early aftermath, there were no reports of severe injuries or damage. “We have no information at this stage relating to significant damage (but) we continue to assess the situation,” stated Fabien Levy, the spokesperson for New York Mayor Eric Adams, on X. “We continue to assess the situation.” On the account of the iconic Empire State Building, “I’m OK” was also a reassurance that was provided as well.
An overwhelming number of messages were posted on various social media platforms as a result of the small earthquake that was felt in a number of neighborhoods across the boroughs of Manhattan and Brooklyn. The security cameras that were capturing the meeting of the Security Council to discuss the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza started shaking inside the offices of the United Nations.
Several cities on the East Coast of the United States, including New York, are evaluating the effects of an unusual earthquake that caused landmarks to shake and roadways to break.
The earthquake, which measured 4.8 on the Richter scale, occurred at 10:23 local time (15:23 BST) close to Lebanon, New Jersey, and its effects were felt all the way from Pennsylvania to Connecticut.
Residents have said that they were shaken by a powerful rumble that caused objects to be thrown around their homes and caused walls to be destroyed.
Risk evaluations of the infrastructure are currently being carried out by the authorities.
At least six aftershocks were reported by locals and the United States Geological Survey, one of which had a magnitude of 4.0 and was felt at approximately 18:00 local time.
During the original earthquake that struck New York City, the Statue of Liberty was observed to be swaying, and residents and workers in all five boroughs of the city reported hearing strong rumbling.
During her time at a building in lower Manhattan, Jane Coxwell reported to the BBC that she experienced a “rattling” that resembled the sound of a train passing by. I have become accustomed to the rattling that comes from the subway as a result of living in New York. I was under the impression that it was that,” she stated.
After that, I became aware that I was on the ninth floor. Undoubtedly, it was a little bit unstable. It felt like a train that was passing by.”
Several residents in Brooklyn and the Bronx have claimed that their cupboards, doors, and fixtures are rattling.
According to Charita Walcott, a resident of the Bronx who is 38 years old, the earthquake manifested itself as “a violent rumble that lasted approximately thirty seconds.”
“It was kind of like being in a drum circle, that vibration,” she explained to me.
Another New Yorker shared with CBS News, the United States partner of the BBC, how their slow morning was abruptly converted into a hectic one. During the time that I was lying in bed, the entire apartment building began to shake. It was then that I began to freak out,” they stated.
An ongoing meeting on Gaza at the offices of the United Nations Security Council was abruptly halted as a result of the earthquake. A representative from Save the Children named Janti Soeripto, who was speaking at the moment, asked, “Is that an earthquake?”
As a result of the inspection of the runways at JFK Airport in New York and Newark Airport in New Jersey, flight operations at both airports were momentarily halted.
However, despite all of the drama, Governor Kathy Hochul of the state of New York stated that there had been no reports of significant injuries or substantial damage.
Despite the fact that Ms. Hochul warned of aftershocks, she stated that they are routine and are not anticipated to cause any additional harm.
It was reported on social media by a number of users that the most recent aftershock occurred in the early evening. One of these users was the official page for the Empire State Building, which posted on X the following messages: “Not again” and “I’m still fine.”
David Scibione, a resident of Union, New Jersey, who lives around 35 miles away from the epicentre, described to CBS how “things on our roof started coming down” when the shaking started. In addition, by the time it was over, the roads that around his home had become separated from the force.
During the time that the rumbling began, another New Jersey resident named Allison Martins was recording on TikTok. As her camera captured her house shaking, her “little video on the day in the life of somebody who works from nine to five” evolved into something more than that.
“We’re not used to having earthquakes in New Jersey, let alone a big one like this; we were all scared,” she explained to reporters.
The Governor of New Jersey, Phil Murphy, stated that his state has also begun an evaluation of the safety situation. The tunnels along the Hudson River were his primary concern, despite the fact that there were no reports of significant damage.
“The rail tunnels were built in…1911, which is why we’re building two new ones,” he explained to reporters.
In spite of the fact that earthquakes are uncommon, the East Coast and New York City are not unfamiliar with the phenomenon.
Both the 5.1-magnitude earthquake that occurred in New York City in 1884 and the 5.0-magnitude tremor that occurred in New York City in 1983 were both recorded in the vicinity of the town of Newcomb in upstate New York.
