Defense Secretary Wants 9/11 'Mastermind' Trial

After rejecting a plea agreement, U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin stated on Tuesday that the families of the victims and citizens of the United States should be able to witness the “mastermind” of the September 11, 2001, attacks and other defendants brought to justice.

The self-described “mastermind” of the assaults that have rocked the United States, Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, had agreed to a compromise that was meant to spare him the death penalty. However, the Pentagon swiftly rescinded the pact on Friday in response to a protest from political leaders and the relatives of the victims.

Lloyd Austin stated during a press conference in Annapolis, close to Washington, “the families of the victims, our service members, and the American people deserve to see the military commission trials in this case go to trial.”

“I never go a day without thinking about 9/11 and the Americans who lost their lives on that tragic day.” Austin, who led soldiers in Afghanistan following the September 11 attacks and received a Silver Star for his leadership during the 2003 invasion of Iraq, added, “As well as those who died trying to save lives, and the troops and their families who gave so much for this country.”

Several attorneys and civil rights groups engaged in the Guantanamo Bay trials are contesting the validity of Austin’s move, claiming that Austin gave in to political pressure by rejecting the plea agreement.

For the first time since Austin’s order, open hearings are set to resume on Wednesday, and they could provide insight into the defense’s reaction to the overriding of the plea agreement.
