The poor reception of 'The Acolyte'

Again, there is a gulf between reviewers and audiences, but this terrible gulf is unprecedented.

Fans’ opinions on almost every “Star Wars” series have been divided. Similar to the diverse range of viewpoints that have surrounded the most recent film trilogy, every subsequent series in the franchise, with the exception of the first season of “The Mandalorian,” has generated concerns, some of which are unrelated to the fictions themselves. Naturally, the phenomenon has been replicated with ‘The Acolyte,’ but unlike before, the issues with the series cannot be attributed solely to specters that are visible only to the most ardent followers.

Lost gem of a TV show. ‘The Mandalorian’ and the subsequent Disney+ series have at times elicited wildly divergent opinions from both critics and viewers. For your reference, here are the ratings that each of them has received: the first number represents the rating from critics, and the second is the rating from the audience.

‘The Mandalorian‘ and ‘Andor’ had two seasons that received universally positive reviews, whereas the spin-off series ‘The Book of Bobba Fett’ received consistently lower ratings. Generally speaking, critics and audiences have vastly different views on each case, with “The Acolyte” being the most extreme example (though this may not always be the case).

The never-fail review bombing. It is a real phenomenon, regardless of our perspective. Some fans band together on online communities like 4chan, Reddit, or Discord servers to spew hate speech about a product—either because of its political leanings or because it threatens the franchise’s or brand’s future. The disparity between public and critical views always implies something intriguing; it’s not a sure thing, but it serves as a signal. There are a number of ways to spot them, such as a spike in bad reviews, particularly brief ones, or extremely divided scores.

“Star Wars” falls short in several key areas. The ‘Star Wars’ franchise is a huge enigma for Disney. The public was not entirely pleased with the most recent trilogy of films, which had tremendous box office success, and in March of last year, it was reported that the projects of Kevin Feige and Patty Jenkins had been scrapped. Unfortunately, the anti-woke policies of many fans have gotten in the way of these productions. The female lead in ‘The Mandalorian’ S3 and ‘Ahsoka’ failed to satisfy the most politically active fandom, and the franchise is failing to appeal to the males of Generation X, who are gradually becoming its main viewers, according to a Nielsen study.

“The Acolyte” is yet another nail. The High Republic setting of “The Acolyte” is both a unique aspect of the Star Wars canon and its greatest flaw, according to our friends at Vida Extra: this period predates the Skywalker Saga, which the majority of the films take place in, and has received very little attention. The script is badly written, with a murder serving as the plot’s foundation and failing to engage the audience at any point, therefore the series fails to make use of this blank canvas.

Undoubtedly, the main reason why a lot of fans are so frustrated is that series creator Leslye Headland admitted that not all scriptwriters were familiar with the ‘Star Wars’ brand, and some of them didn’t even grasp the basics. Is that where the series’ major issues begin—the incessant messing with the classic narrative, the inconsistencies with previously established facts? Is that truly the most crucial consideration for a work of fiction, or are we addressing the capricious demands of an unyielding fandom?

Time bomb. A 13% fan rating is absolutely unprecedented in the franchise, so it’s evident that Disney is getting closer to a ticking time bomb. Does Disney simply need to care about the number of people who watch their shows? Currently, there’s a fresh turn of events: the fifth episode has recently been released, and it features fan-loved moments like the lightsaber battle between Dafne Keen and Manny Jacinto, which has been hailed as “The best in the series since ‘The Phantom Menace'” by some. Which might be a welcome change of pace… or just a charming aside that won’t alter the big picture.
